Abstract
795,681. Pipe couplings. AVIMO, Ltd. Aug. 14, 1956 [Aug. 15, 1955], No. 23403/55. Class 99(1). A locking device for a bayonet type joint comprises a spring-pressed manually retractable member shown as a sleeve 6, Fig. 1, on one part of the joint engageable with a complementary member on the other part, Fig. 2, the member 6 being angularly displaced relatively to the bayonet parts and brought into locking engagement by the relative rotation involved in uniting the bayonet parts. As shown, a sleeve 4 rotatable on a socket 1 carries studs 5 engaging bayonet slots 11 in the casing 10 of a spigot 8, and the sleeve 6 has a pin-and-slot connection 6b, 4b with the sleeve 4, is retractable against the action of a spring 6a and carries detents 7 which engage the entrances of the slots 11 when the sleeve 4 has been turned through an angle of 90 degrees. In a modification (not illustrated), the pins 5 are carried directly by the housing of the socket 1, and the locking sleeve is mounted for axial displacement directly on the housing. Automatically operated valves 2, 9 are unseated by contact with one another so as to open a flow through the coupling when the coupling units are connected and are mounted in the socket and spigot respectively, and a conical surface on the valve 2 effects a seal with a flared part 8a of the spigot 8.
