Abstract

383,633. Pipe couplings. HUNT, N. C., 1883, East State Street, Salem, Ohio, U.S.A. April 20, 1931, No. 11695. Convention date, April 25, 1930. [Class 99 (i).] In a combined valve and pipe coupling for pressure air or water lines, wherein the pipe coupling comprises jaws 62 pivoted at 62<1> to a valve body 40 and having hooks 63 fitting a groove in the hose connection member 48, and the valve comprises a sleeve 51 movable axially on the valve body to " on " and " off " positions, the end of the valve sleeve when in the " on " position Fig. 2, underlies the ends 70 of the jaws 62 and prevents them from being opened. The sleeve 51 carries ears 71 which on rotating the sleeve through 90‹ follow the cam-shaped ends 70 of the jaws and cause the sleeve to move to the " off " position where the jaws still remain locked until the sleeve is rotated through a further 90'. The valve comprises a dividing wall 42 with byepass openings 43 at each side which are put into communication by a groove 54 in the sleeve 51. In the " off " position the sleeve is stopped by a shoulder 49 and the exhaust openings are uncovered so that the exhaust side bleeds to the atmosphere. A shoulder 50 forms a stop for the " on " position. At each side of the groove 54 there is a groove housing a U- leather 57 having bevelled edges subject to the pressure fluid in all positions so that the valve stays in whatever position it is set independently of vibration &c. The byepass openings 43 are bevelled or burnished at their outer ends to prevent damage to the U-leathers. In the coupling for an air line, Fig. 2, the body carries a U-shaped leather sealing cup 65 attached to its end by a protecting and aligning nut 66 having one or more apertures 68 so that the washer is pressed by the fluid against the inner surfaces of the coupled parts 40, 48, to form a leak-proof joint. The valve body also has an annular end projection 46 received in a recess in the hose connection member 48. In the water-line coupling the screw 66 and leather washer 65 are omitted, there being a rubber sealing tube projecting from a recess in the valve body and pressed direct by fluid pressure against the coupled members. The hose connection 48 and pipe connection 41 may be transposed or both connections may be either for hoses or pipes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a simpler form wherein the clamping jaws 62 are omitted, the hose connection 48 being directly screwed into the valve body and the pipe connection 41 being integral therewith. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
