Abstract

844,258. Pipe couplings. WEATHERHEAD CO. June 25, 1957, No. 20064/57. Class 99(1). In a pipe coupling comprising in each coupling member A, B, a rotary valve 10 actuated by rotatable rings C, D, a locking member 108 which prevents rotation of the ring C and hence locks the valve 10 in the member A in the closed position when the coupling is disconnected is rendered inoperative when the coupling members are connected. The rings C, D are mounted on stationary body members 14, 128, and carry racks 84 which mesh with pinions 36 on the valve spindles 10, the coupling members being connected by a bayonet type connection comprising undercut lugs 86, Fig. 2, on the ring C which co-operate with projections 133, Fig. 3, on the body member 128. The ring D carries projections 132 which engage between the lugs 86 on the ring C to connect the two rings for rotation together. The ring C is connected to a rotatable collar 98 and the locking pin 108 is mounted in the body member 14 and has a projection 110 which engages a recess 114 in the ring C to prevent rotation of the ring relative to the stationary member 14 when the coupling is disconnected. A spring- loaded ball 150 also engages a recess 152 in the ring D to hold the ring D releasably locked in the valve-closed position when the coupling is disconnected. On connection of the coupling the spigot end 16 of member 14 is inserted axially into the socket 136 of member 128 which member simultaneously forces locking pin 108 back to release ring C. The collar 98 is then rotated to turn sleeve C which, through engagement of the lugs 86 with projections 132, also turns ring D so that the valves 10 are rotated to the open position simultaneously. The rotation of ring D also causes the lugs 86 to engage the projections 133 in bayonet fastening fashion and lock the coupling parts A, B, together, the collar 98 being locked in its coupling completed position by a spring-loaded ball 120 carried by the body part 14 engaging an aperture 126 in the collar 98. The valves 10 are coupled to their spindles 20 by a tongue 26 engaging a groove 24 which lies parallel to the flow axis when the valves are closed, permitting a spring- loaded sealing sleeve 42 to move the valve laterally to seat tightly against a sealing ring 40 of "Teflon" (Registered Trade Mark) when the coupling is disconnected. The threaded pipe connector 58 is rotatably connected to the body member 14 by a split retainer ring 74 which engages in recesses 68, 70, of the connector 58 and body 14 and is secured by a retaining ring 78 and washer 80 ; the corresponding pipe connector 148 of the member B is secured by a screw-threaded connection 146. A dowel pin 116 in the body member 14 engages a corresponding recess 134 in the body member 128 to ensure correct location of the parts during coupling.
