Abstract
888,541. Pipe couplings. K. A. C. Ltd. Nov. 23, 1960 [Aug. 25, 1959; Sept. 2, 1959], Nos. 29089/59 and 30010/59. Class 99(1). A self-sealing coupling for detachably connecting pipes in fluid-tight intercommunication, comprises two tubular main parts 1, 2 at least part of one of which is rotatable relatively to the other about the axes of the coupling parts for effecting the connection and disconnection of such parts, a swivelling disc or butterfly-type closure valve 7 for at least one of the main parts, and means, operating as a result of relative rotation of the relatively rotatable parts of the coupling, for automatically closing the valve or valves when the coupling parts are disconnected and opening the valve or valves when such parts are connected. As shown in Fig. 1, the part 1 is relatively rotatable with respect to a sleeve 1b and terminates in a socket 3 provided with bayonet slots 4 which receive radial pins on thepart 2. Within the socket are dogs 14 for engagement with complementary dogs 13 on the part 2, and a groove housing a resilient sealing ring 6. The valve disc 7 is mounted on trunnions 8 and carries a sealing ring 11 for co-operation with a part spherical seating 9. A sleeve 2b retained in and rotatable relatively to the part 2, carries a valve 15 mounted on trunnions 16 and including resilient arms 19 which carry driving pins 21 that work in arcuate slots 22 in the wall of the sleeve and extending into longitudinal grooves 23 in the wall of part 2. Connection of the parts is effected by introducing the part 2 into the socket 3 to engage the dogs 13, 14, and to enter the pins into the slots 4, and the relatively rotating the socket and part 2. Such relative rotation causes the pins to move around the slots 4 to lock the coupling parts together and relative rotation of the sleeve 2b and part 2 to thereby cause the pins 21 to move along the slots and grooves 22, 23 and effect rocking of the valves 7, 15 about the trunnions thereof. In a modification, the valve disc 44, Fig. 5; has mounted thereon a resilient metal sealing disc 48 for co-operation with part-spherical seating 43 and is provided with a driving peg 50, which is engageable in an arcuate groove 61 in the similar valve disc 54. Both valve discs are mounted on pivot pins 45 rotatable in bosses 47. Upon connection of the coupling parts, the valve discs are brought into face-to-face abutment and relative rotation of those parts causes co-operation between the peg 50 and groove 61 to rotate the valves wherein the planes of the latter are parallel with the axes of the coupling parts.
