Abstract

571,643. Pipe couplings. TURNER, H., and BROWN, T. Feb. 5,1944, No. 2147. [Class 99 (i)] A pipe coupling comprises a spring urged catch 21 of tubular form having a pair of opposite lugs 22 by one of which it is pivoted on a pin 24 in a plane at right angles to the axis of the socket 19, the catch engaging a shoulder 10 on the spigot 9 which engages the gasket 38 and opens the valve 35. The catch is released by the operation of a sleeve 25. The socket has a conical guiding surface 30 for the spigot which is a fit in the bore 31, the latter having ports for venting the socket during release. The spigot has two conical portions 13, 15 having a common base 14 which is a fit within the bore of the catch and is located adjacent its pivot in the coupled position. The conical portions of the spigot have line contact with opposite sides of the bore of the catch and the end of the latter has an inclined face 40 which is parallel to the shoulder 10 in the coupled position.
