In a shuttered socket, the spring-pressed slidable shutter 18 is actuated to uncover the socket contacts 12, 13 on insertion of the earth pin of a plug which contacts the upper lug 30 of a lever 29, lugs 30, 31 on which project through aligned slots 32, 33 respectively in a channel 25 forming part of the earth socket contact, the subsequent pivoting of the lever moving the shutter which engages a cam face 34 on the lever.
