Abstract
786,195. Valves. HYDRA-POWER CORPORATION. July 2, 1954, No. 19447/54. Class 135. A valve consists of a cylindrical closure member 34 which is axially movable in a bore in which is fitted a sleeve 14 having an annular portion 38 which, in combination with a recess in the bore forms an annular chamber to receive an 0-ring 41 of rubber &c. with which the member 34 forms a seal when, in its closed position, it enters the mouth of the annular chamber and deforms the 0-ring as shown in the left-hand part of the Figure. The part 38 of the sleeve 14 constitutes a stop for the valve member which is guided when in and near the closed position by a reduced part 36 of the bore. The cross-section of the 0-ring is initially of greater diameter than the radial width of the annular chamber, and the radial width of the mouth of the annular chamber is less than onehalf of the radial width of the chamber. A joint between the sleeve 14 and the body of the valve is formed on the side of the 0-ring remote from that to which the controlled pressure fluid has access. As shown, the invention is applied to a shuttle valve in which an outlet 21 is connected to either of a pair of inlets 15, 16 depending upon which is at the higher pressure. A sprung ball 27 coacting with a flange 26 locates the shuttle in either of its extreme positions. Grooves 23a<1>, 23b<1> are formed in the movable member for the passage of fluid. The invention is stated to be applicable also to relief, check, poppet, globe or needle valves.
