Abstract
781,039. Purifying smoke and gases. DOB. ESCH, C. Sept. 20, 1955, No. 26876/55. Class 55 (2). A process for removing solids from smoke or gases comprises compressing the smoke and saturated water vapour to the same excess pressure and expanding both compressed media from a common pressure vessel 2 through a throttling valve 5 into a chamber 6, indirectly cooled by coils or plates 13, to condense the water vapour and deposit the solids. The smoke is compressed by pump 1 and the saturated water vapour by pump 4 before entering vessel 2, the mixture being at about 5 atmospheres pressure. The throttling valve 5 is controlled by a regulator 7 under the influence of a manometer 8 in the chamber 6, the latter being maintained at 0.9 atmospheres pressure or less. The condensate formed on the solid particles such as dust flows off through discharge 9 and may be separated by filtration, whereas the smoke passes to the atmosphere at 11 through a suction pump 10. A pump 12 supplies cooling water to coils or plates 13, part of the water branching at 14 through a pipe 15 to a preheater 16, heated by the hot smoke, and then passes through line 17 to the steam generator 3. In a modification, the chamber 6 leads directly to the atmosphere and the valve 5 either works automatically in dependence on the difference of pressure across it or else is controlled from a manometer in the vessel 2.
