Abstract
<PICT:0593359/III/1> Apparatus for separating gaseous mixtures comprises two adsorber units 2, 3, the gas being passed through one unit, e.g., 3, from a main inlet 4 to an outlet 8 while the adsorbent earth &c. in the other unit 2 is being reactivated. Each unit is provided with a coil, not shown, through which heating steam and cooling fluid is passed in succession during the reactivating stage and, simultaneously with the heating, reactivating gas is circulated continuously through the adsorbent and through a closed circuit including a cooler or condenser 15, provided with a condensate escape trap 18, by a pump or blower 11, this gas being maintained at a pressure of, for example, from 1 to 5 pounds per square inch above atmospheric pressure. The supply of gas, to and from the unit 3, is controlled by four-way valves 5, 7, these valves also permitting reactivating gas to flow from the pump 11 and through pipes 10, 9 to the unit 2 and from thence through pipes 13, 14, condenser 15, pipe 16, and auxiliary condensate trap 17 back to said pump. Gas to the closed reactivating circuit is supplied from the main 4 through pipes 20, 22, 23 having an intermediate valve 21 whch is set to open when the pressure in the circuit reaches the predetermined minimum of 1 pound per square inch; the pump 11 is also provided with a pressure relief valve 19 which is set to blow off at the maximum pressure required in the circuit. After reactivation of the unit 2 the valves 5, 7 are actuated to connect this unit in series with the gas inlet and outlet 4, 8 and the unit 3 with the reactivating gas circuit 10, 11. Prior to this, however, valves 12 and 121 in the latter circuit are closed and the pressure in unit 2 is built up to that in the main 4 by opening a needle valve 25 in a shunt pipe circuit 24 across the pipes 20, 23; then, after actuating the valves 5, 7, the pressure in the unit 3 is relieved by opening an exhaust bleed-valve 131, after which the valves 12, 121 are reopened. Both units are fitted with pressure gauges G. The invention is applicable to apparatus comprising a single adsorber unit.
