Abstract

<PICT:0913945/III/1> Apparatus for treating a pipeline by causing compressed air to flow therealong comprises means (a compressor 20, as shown) for compressing air, means 32 for condensing such moisture as may be in the compressed air, means 40 or 41 for exposing the compressed air to a hygroscopic agent, storage means 38 for the compressed air, and regulating means 64 for releasing the stored air into the pipeline 10 under predetermined pressure. The compressed air may be used for drying the pipeline, or for propelling treating means, e.g. plugs, such as described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,480,358 and 2,707,934, through the pipeline; cleaning or coating liquids may be enclosed between the plugs. Similar apparatus may be provided at both ends of the pipeline, adapted to introduce the stored air into opposite ends at different pressures, for controlling the movement of the treating means. Access joints such as 13 may be coupled to the ends of the pipeline by couplings 14 and each provide a chamber 105 for introduction or removal of the plugs when the cover 120 (which may be of the type described in U.S.A. Specification 2,663,326) is removed, and chambers 106 and 107, to which the plugs may be admitted through pneumatically-operated gate valves 108 and 109. Compressed air may be admitted to the chambers 105 and 106, or removed therefrom through the back pressure regulator 100. Treating liquids may be introduced into the chamber 107, in such a manner as to be enclosed between two plugs, through a pipe 122 controlled by a valve 121, and may be removed through a pipe 123, controlled by a valve 125, and leading to a strainer 126 and pressure relief valve 131.
