Abstract

A breathing-apparatus using a liquid oxygen converter has means for returning excess oxygen from the breathing system to the converter. The converter 1 is filled through connection 3 and pipes 9, 17, while the enclosed air is allowed to escape through outlet 27, pipe 14 and connection 3. Removal of the filling union closes pipe 9 and connects pipes 13, 14 whereupon oxygen through pipes 17, 10 becomes evaporated in heating coil 12 and builds up the pressure in the converter, through pipes 13, 14 and connection 27 until a pressure-actuated valve 4 closes. When the system is in use liquid oxygen from pipe 17 passes through a non-return valve 18 and a liquid oxygen trap 19 to a further non- return valve 7, after which it passes to a heating coil 16, demand regulator 22 and face mask 28. During each exhalation any liquid oxygen which has collected in the trap 19 is evaporated in the coil 24 and is returned as gaseous oxygen through a differential valve 26 to the converter 1. During the initial stages of use, when gaseous oxygen will have accumulated in the converter, this gas escapes through outlet 27, pipes 14, 13, through a connection between valves 4, 5 and pipe 15 to the user. The valve 5 is opened only by high pressures and when the initial pressure has been reduced sufficiently, this valve closes and operation of the system continues as described above.
