Abstract
326,400. Triggs, W. W., (American Machine & Foundry Co.). May 6, 1929. Tobacco.-In order to counteract the shrinkage of tobacco during curing, the cured and conditioned tobacco is subjected to the action of a gas under pressure to cause the gas to penetrate the tobacco, and the pressure is suddenly released to cause expansion of the tobacco. The gas may be air, carbon dioxide, steam, &c., at a temperature of about 110‹ C. and under a pressure of about 20 lbs., and may carry a tobacco-treating medium. In the apparatus shown, tobacco is placed in a removable perforated container 3 spaced from the walls of a jacketed chamber 4 having a steamtight cover 5. Steam may be admitted to the jacket through a valve 34 to heat the chamber 4. Gas under pressure is admitted to chamber inlet 11 from a supply pipe 30 through valves 29, 13 and passages 15, 16. The valve 29 is a three-way valve which can be used to admit gas from the pipe 30, treating medium from a pipe 32, or both. The valve 13 also admits the gas to the rear face of a piston valve 12, which is held on a seat 18 until the pressure is relieved by opening a valve 14 leading to an outlet 23, when the gas in the chamber 4 can escape through the outlet 23. The chamber 4 may be exhausted, by means of a suction pump connected to a valve 36, before opening the gas admission valve 29.
