Abstract

[Class 51(i)] Slag is discharged from pressure-fired furnaces, gas-producers and the like, into a closed chamber, and the slag-flow is controlled by regulation of the pressure of the atmosphere of the chamber. As shown, the passage 5 connects the slag-pool 3 to the chamber 6 which has an inlet 9, controlled by a valve 10, for the admission of air, steam or gas, e.g. hot waste gases, and an outlet 11 controlled by a valve 12, which may be connected to an exhauster. The slag issuing from the passage 5 is granulated by water nozzles 7, and solidified slag may be removed from the passage by a drill 13 on a driving-shaft 14 which passes through a stuffing-box 15. Slag sand and water is discharged through a suitable valve 8. The flow of slag is reduced or stopped by opening valve 10 and closing valve 12, so that gas flows in regulable volume through the passage 5 into the combustion chamber. By closing valve 10 and opening valve 12 and, if necessary, using suction, the flow of slag is increased.
