Class 123(3) In apparatus for separating liquid mists from gases by means of a plurality of filter candles 2 disposed in a chamber 1 having a gas inlet 4, gas outlet 5, and condensate discharge pipe 7, a valve is provided in the pipe 7 which is adapted when throttled or closed to cause the level of condensate to rise in chamber 1, so that the condensate serves as a seal for part of the filter surface of each candle. In the apparatus shown, valves 8, 11, 13, 15 are opened or closed so that the condensate level is at 6, 10, 12, 14, or 18. In a simplified apparatus, Fig. 2 (not shown), valves 11, 13, 15 are omitted and valve 8 is regulated to provide the required condensate level. Valve 8 may be automatically regulated according to the gas throughput or the desired liquid level.
