655,889. Contacting liquids with gases. SCHNEIBLE, C. B. April 16, 1948, No. 10608. [Class 55(ii)] An apparatus for producing intimate contact between liquids and gases comprises a vertical cylindrical chamber 10 having a gas inlet 13 and outlet 14. Liquid is introduced at 15 over an arrangement of baffles 16 and can be drained from an outlet pipe 12. The baffles 16 comprise rings 17 and plates 18 spaced apart by vanes 19 which are so inclined as to deflect the gas to assist it to form a rotating annulus around each set of baffles. In a modified form of baffles, Fig. 4, the plate 18a is dished and provided with a central opening 21 while the rings are spaced from the chamber 10 leaving openings 20. These openings allow liquid to byepass the rotating gas so that it is either atomized lower in the chamber or dilutes the product at the bottom of the chamber. Plugs 22 may be used to close or control the flow through the openings 20 or 21.
