Abstract
569,052. Moistening gases. PEABODY, Ltd. (Peabody Engineering Corporation). April 20, 1943, No. 6323. [Class 55 (ii)] A gas and liquid contact apparatus has one or more treating zones each comprising a diaphragm to which liquid is supplied to maintain a blanket of liquid thereon and wherein the gas passes upwardly through orifices in the diaphragm at a velocity sufficient to prevent downward flow of the liquid through the orifices, the diaphragm comprising plates having downwardly extending ducts into each of which liquid overflows from side margins of adjacent plates. A gas scrubber comprises a vertical cylindrical housing having one or more cleaning or cooling zones, a drying zone, and an upper gas discharge duct. The drying zone may comprise a plurality of centrifugal driers having a plurality of radial vanes. adapted to cause the gases to pass upwardly therethrough at an increasing velocity and to rotate to remove drops of entrained liquid centrifugally. Each cleaning zone 11, Fig. 2, comprises a plurality of segmental diaphragm plates 20, Figs. 2 and 7, having apertures 21 therein through which the gases pass and above which are baffles 22 against which the gases impinge. A horizontal ledge 30 is attached to the shell 10 by an angle member 31. Radial members 32 have ears 33 attached to ears 34 attached to shell 10 and ears attached to gusset plates 36 carried by the vertical flange 37 of the central imperforate plate 38. Each member 32 comprises side plates 40, 41 flared outwardly at the top and having top horizontal flanges 42, 43. The side plate 40 has a bottom horizontal flange 44 with an upturned lip 45 forming a bottom trough, and the side plate 41 extends into the trough to provide a liquid seal. The ends of the trough are closed by end pieces 48. The members 32 are assembled so that the top surfaces of flanges 42, 43 are flush with the top surfaces of ledge 30 and plate 38. Each plate 20 extends between adjacent radial members 32 and rests on the ledge 30, the central plate 38, and on flanges of adjacent members 32. Clamping strips 50 form weirs to control the depth of liquid on the plates 20. Water or other liquid supplied to the upper cleaning zone 11 overflows from plates 20 of this zone into ducts 32, to form a liquid seal and then overflows on to the plates 20 of the next lower cleaning zone. Gases introduced at the lower end of casing 10 passupwardly through apertures 21 in the plates 20, impinge against baffles 22, and similarly through other cleaning zones to the driers and out at the top gas discharge duct. The area of the overflow ducts is such that sufficient depth of liquid in the ducts is provided to produce a hydrostatic head slightly greater than the differential pressure of the gas below and above the perforated plates. A single cleaning zone may be used and baffles 22 omitted.
