Abstract

992,236. Condensation of vapours ; gas filters. AMERICAN STERILIZER CO. March 26, 1962 [June 12, 1961], No. 11368/62. Headings BIB and BIT. Vapours, e.g. steam withdrawn from a sterilizing autoclave 1, are condensed in a condenser 7 maintained under reduced pressure by a vacuum pump 6, operated by a fluid medium (e.g. oil) having a lower vapour pressure than the condensate, the required vacuum being set at the pump by means of valve 8, and being maintained substantially constant in the condenser by regulating the pressure of the vapour supplied to the condenser through valve 34. A carbon filter 24 is mounted in the condenserhousing between the cooling-coil 10 and the vacuum pump. The filter is preferably impregnated with a water-repelling substance, such as a silicone. The filter is surrounded by a cylindrical baffle 28, the base of which has openings 30. Valve 34 has a pneumatic drive which is connected to the condenser-housing via pipe 35. Valve 34 opens at a predetermined subatmospheric pressure in the condenser, and closes at a higher pressure. Temperaturesensitive device 36 in line 5 also controls valve 34 and ensures that all the vapour is condensed, and that only permanent gases pass through the filter to the pump. In an example, steam is condensed at a pressure of more than 450 Torr, an adjustment to 60 Torr having been made at the pump.
