Abstract

<PICT:0397128/III/1> <PICT:0397128/III/2> Apparatus for the recovery of gases and vapours by adsorption in materials such as active charcoal comprises an annular container b for the adsorbent material which is mounted eccentrically in a cylindrical casing a, and the top of this container is provided with a steam jacket a<3> to prevent condensation of the steam used for the recovery of the adsorbed material. The inner and outer walls of the container are perforated so that the gases entering through the inlet c readily pass through the filter bed via the annular space h and are withdrawn from the central space b<1> by the valved outlet b<2>. A deflecting plate e which is concentric with the centre of the container b is placed opposite the inlet c and midway between the casing a and the outer wall of the container b. The top plate a<1> is provided with a circular baffle a<6> to prevent passage of gases over the top of the adsorbent material. The gases may be passed in the reverse direction through the adsorbent material. To recover the adsorbed material the inlet and outlet valves are closed and steam, preferably superheated, is passed through the apparatus via the inlet j and outlet k or in the reverse direction. To avoid accumulation of moisture at the bottom of the container b, the bottom plate b<3> may be raised above the bottom of the annular space h. The apparatus is particularly applicable to solvent recovery from air, the gases being passed through the filter bed by pressure, pressure and suction, or preferably suction only. Suitable coils for the passage of a heating or a cooling medium may be provided to allow temperature control in the different stages in the adsorption process.
