Abstract

An apparatus for recovering solvents from gases or for drying air and other gases comprises an annular member (1) divided radially into compartments (17) and rotatable in an closed outer container (2), and two circumferential series of ports (19, 21) respectively in the inner and outer walls of the annular member and at opposite ends thereof, an inlet (40, 41, 46) and an outlet (79) for desorption medium, gas-tight members 149, 57 through which said inlet and outlet communicate respectively with a series of ports and one or more perforated boxes (23) containing absorbent in each of said compartments. As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 (not shown) to which the above numerals relate, solvent-laden gas enters the outer casing 2 of the apparatus at 35 and passes through those of the ports 19 which are exposed, into compartments 17 each of which contains carbon adsorbent in a pair of boxes 23 having a perforated top and bottom and sealed into the compartment by means of flanges 22, 25. The solvent-free air then passes into the interior of the drum through the corresponding ports 21 and is removed through an outlet in end-plate 14. When a compartment reaches the position shown in the lower part of the drum, it is sealed from the gas in the outer casing by a shoe 56 and from the gas in the interior by shoe 49 having an opening 51. Steam for removing adsorbed solvent is admitted at 40 to pipe 41 and passes via pipe 46 to shoe 49, and thence through opening 51 in the shoe and the corresponding port 21 into the compartment. After passing through the adsorbent, the steam and entrained solvent leave through the corresponding port 19 and opening 58 in shoe 56 and is withdrawn through pipe 78. The Specification also mentions the optional inclusion of filtering means in the base of the apparatus to remove dust particles from incoming gas and of a heater or cooler. Steam may be admitted continuously or intermittently at e.g. 60-100 p.s.i. The carbon may be dried with hot air in a similar manner to the steam treatment.
