Abstract

270,099. Godel, A. May 28, 1926. Gases, separating mixtures of. - Solid adsorbents such as carbon or silica gel used for separating gases or vapours are freed from the adsorbed substances by steam in such a way as to conserve a part of the latent heat of the steam usually lost by condensation. In one method two or more separators F, F1 are connected in series as regards the steam supply, with a superheater S or S1 in advance of each separator. A single condenser R and liquid-separator A are provided, but a drain cock may be arranged at the outlet from the first vessel. During the absorption stage the separators may be connected in series or parallel with supply and escape pipes T, T1. In a modification, steam leaving a single adsorption chamber is re-compressed, for instance by an injector, and re-introduced into the superheater and chamber. From the closed circuit thus produced a part of the steam is continuously removed for recovery of the substance adsorbed. In a second method, the heat of condensation of steam issuing from an adsorption chamber is employed to evaporate a fresh supply of water, or to re-evaporate the condensate itself, after removal of the substance adsorbed; the secondary steam generated is employed in another adsorption chamber, which may be the first of two chambers arranged 'as in Fig. 2. The apparatus may then be of the multiple-effect type; or the secondary steam may be compressed before use. Steam at different pressures may be superheated through equal ranges of temperature. Saturated steam may be employed, if the absorption chambers are preliminarily heated by other means. The adsorption chambers, or the later ones of a series, may be under reduced pressure during steaming, to avoid overheating of the substances recovered, which may be volatile solvents such as benzol, gasolene, &c. Two or more adsorption chambers may be arranged within a single casing. Specification 239,889 is referred to.
