Abstract

777,781. Projectile fuzes. SALORANTA, A. E. and PURONTO, E. June 14, 1955, No. 17049/55. Class 9 (1). A percussion fuze fitted in the nose of a shell 1 comprises a firing pin 8 which abuts a striker 19 and is surrounded by a locking sleeve or bolt 12 extending into a transverse slide 13 carrying a primer 18, whereby the primer is held out of alignment with the striker. Into the base 3 of the fuze is fitted a booster 7 and an auxiliary booster both of which may contain tetryl. A pin 17 extends through the base 3 to guide the slide 13 around the head of which slide is a spring 5 held in position by a cap 4. The bolt 12 is held in the locking position by a spring 11 and balls 10, and is further secured during transport by a split pin 15 or a screw pin (not shown). The sensitivity of the striker may be reduced by fitting over it a cap 21, the elasticity and rigidity of the cap determining the sensitivity of the striker. Upon discharge of the projectile, due to inertia, the bolt 12 sets back against the action of its spring and releases the balls 10. As the projectile decelerates, the spring 11 moves the bolt forwards thus releasing the slide 13, which is then moved by its spring to the armed position with the primer aligned with the striker. When the shell is rotated, the movement of the slide may be produced by centrifugal force. The firing pin 8 also sets back on discharge of the projectile and is only returned to the firing position after the projectile has left the barrel. Openings 19 may be formed in the striker to equalise the air pressure on the striker.
