Abstract
985,826. Projectile fuzes. HOTCHKISSBRANDT. Dec. 12, 1961 [Dec. 19, 1960], No. 44381/61. Heading F3A. In a direct-action projectile fuze a piston 21 is slidable between the inner surface 6 of the fuze body 1 and a carrier 15 and sets back, on firing, against the action of a spring 24a to release locking balls 17, its motion being further damped by the oscillatory passage of a pin 25 in a groove 19 formed in the wall of the carrier 15, Fig. 3. The piston is subsequently driven forwardly to the armed position by spring ;24a and takes with it the carrier 15 and a percussion pin 12 fixed thereto, the pin 25 having engaged a slot 20 at the rear of groove 19. Axial play provided between piston 21 and carrier 15 by movement of pin 25 in slot 20 is such that, on impact, portion 23 of the piston acts as a percussion mass on the carrier 15 and percussion pin 12. With forward movement of the percussion pin 12 a primer support 28 is unlocked and rotates about a pivot 29 (not shown) under the action of a spring 31 to bring a primer 30 on to the line of action of pin 12. Movement of piston 21 is also damped by the creation of a partial vacuum in chamber A during rearward movement and increase of air pressure therein during forward movement.
