Abstract
776,907. Thermionic-cathode tubes; electron beam apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 23, 1955, No. 18175/55. Addition to 750,339. Class 39(1). In a cathode 2 formed from a compressed and sintered mass of refractory metal powder mixed with thermionically emissive material as claimed in the parent Specification the actual emitting surface is very small, being the end surface of a small projecting part 3. This part may be integral with the main body 2, or inset, Fig. 8 (not shown), in which latter case the main body need not contain emissive material. An outer shield 4 surrounds the cathode, which is supported from a tube 1. The shield 4 may be welded to the cathode, or separated therefrom by insulating spacers; it may also act as a heat shield. The end face of the shield may be sloped inwards towards the cathode body, and the end face of the projecting part 3 may also be concave, for electron focusing purposes. Fig. 10 shows the cathode forming part of an electron gun. A concave focusing electrode 12 is secured to the shield 4. The emitting surface of the projection 3 may be in front of, behind, or level with the shield, to suit the required electron optics. The anode comprises a disc 13 having a rearward tubular projection 14 forming an elongated noise-reducing passage for the electron beam.
