Lipsticks are made by (1) depositing molten lipstick from a container 10, Fig. 3, into moulds 41 ; (2) cooling the filled moulds by passing them on an endless belt 2, Fig. 1 through a cooling chamber 3; (3) emptying the moulds and packing the lipsticks at a station 4 ; (4) cleaning the moulds by passing them on an endless belt 5 to a cleaning station 6 ; (5) drying the moulds at 8 ; and (6) returning the dried moulds to the filling station 1. The container 10 has a liquid heating jacket the temperature of which is controlled by device 19, a stirrer 21, a drain tap 25 and a filling nozzle 14. This nozzle comprises, Fig. 4, a tube 29 having apertures 37. When the tube 29 is in its normal position shown in Fig. 4, in which it is pressed down by a spring 36, the nozzle is closed. To open the nozzle the tube 29 is raised so that the apertures 37 are uncovered and communicate with the material in container 10. An inserted spacing prong 40 determines the height to which the tube may be raised and hence the degree to which the apertures are uncovered. The filling rate depends on the level of the material in the container, and three levels may be indicated by marks with which are associated three prongs of differing thickness. A sleeve 42, Fig. 7, or 45, Fig. 9, may be fitted into the open upper end of the mould prior to filling, and forms part of the finished lipstick. The moulds are cleaned by a rotating brush inserted thereinto, with or without liquid detergent, Fig. 10 (not shown). The moulds may be made of transparent polystyrene, or metal, and may be in two parts held together by a slip-on ring. The moulds are supported in containers 47.
