Abstract
662,720. Glass stirring and drawing; glass tubes. POPP, C. H. Sept. 22, 1949, No. 24380/49. Class 56 [Also in Group II] A rotatable stirring sleeve 4 for molten material 2 has around the entire periphery of the end which dips into the material an outwardly and upwardly extending rim 5, 51 whose upper edge rises above the surface of the molten material. The sleeve has a large area in contact with the molten material, e.g. glass, and therefore the glass, etc. is more uniformly heated. In Fig. 1 the sleeve is used with a reciprocating plunger 7 which delivers a gob of glass through the nozzle 3. In Fig. 2 the sleeve is used to form tubing by moving the bait downwardly. The sleeve has a tray 8 holding coloured glass which passes through an aperture or apertures 9 to form a coloured line or lines oh the inside of the tubing. The tray may be divided by radial walls to form several compartments each with an aperture and each of which may contain a glass of different colour to form several lines of different colours. An apparatus for forming tubing with coloured lines on the outside by drawing the part upwardly is also shown.
