Abstract
983,575. Ice-making. J. OLDHAM. Nov. 21, 1963 [Nov. 21, 1962], No. 44071/62. Heading F4H. Frozen confectionery is produced by forming a first part thereof in a first freezing stage, disposing said first part adjacent the mouth of a mould containing further confection material to be frozen and freezing said further confection material in a second freezing stage to form a second part of the confectionery which is joined to the first part. As shown, a first set of mould trays 20 each containing a plurality of moulds and a stick holder from which sticks depend into each mould is passed through a first freezing tank to freeze the confection material within the moulds. The trays are then passed to a defrosting stage 41 comprising a vertically movable tank 42 of a defrosting material and a lifting device 43 which is adapted to engage the stick holder and raise it together with the depending frozen first parts of the confectionery on defrosting thereof. The stick holder is then moved by a conveyer 52 to a lowering device 51 which lowers the holder into one of a second set of mould trays 21, the stick holder being supported in mould tray 21 so that the bottoms of the frozen parts 1 depend into moulds 11 containing further confection material, as shown in Fig. 6. The further confection material is frozen to the first parts 1 during the passage of trays 21 through a second freezing tank 59 to a second defrosting stage 61 where the stick holders and the completed confectionery are removed from the moulds by a lifting device 63 and are supplied to a packing station (not shown) by a conveyer 66. The mould trays 20 are passed from defrosting stage 41 via a washing device and a filling device to the inlet side of tank 40 to receive a stick holder which has been returned from the packing station and filled with sticks from a magazine. Trays 21 are also returned from defrosting stage 61 to a position beneath lowering device 51 via washing and filling stages. The completed frozen confectionery has flat, parallel sides and irregularly shaped edges (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown), or, alternatively, each portion of the confectionery may have upwardly diverging side walls.
