Abstract

Stable solutions of fibrinogen are made by dissolving fibrinogen in an aqueous diluent containing at least 3 per cent of sugars, sugar alcohols or sugar acids so that the resulting solution has an ionic strength of at least 0.30 and a pH not greater than 5.85. The so-formed solution may be lyophilized and reconsituted by addition of water to give a solution suitable for intravenous injection containing at least 2 per cent of fibrinogen. The fibrinogen may be used as a Cohn Fraction 1 paste. Dextrose, pentose sugars, disaccharides, sorbitol and salts of gluconic acid may be used as the sugar component. In an example a Cohn Fraction 1 paste precipitated from pooled plasma is suspended in a buffer comprising sodium citrate dihydrate, sodium chloride, citric acid, dextrose and distilled water, the solution filtered, irradiated with ultraviolet and lyophilized.
