Abstract
In the preparation of a weak acid from a salt of the acid which is initially free of salts of stronger acids, an aqueous solution of the salt of the weak acid and a salt of a stronger acid is used as anolyte in a cell separated from the catholyte by a cationic perselective membrane. The process may be applied to producing acids from solutions of a borate, e.g. borax, tartrate or maleate and the stronger acid salt is preferably sodium sulphate which is present in sufficient concentration to provide at the end of the process a conductivity equal to that of a solution of the weak acid salt alone. The catholyte is preferably an aqueous solution of an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate. Both anolyte and catholyte may be removed batchwise or, if desired, continuously.
