Abstract

A pectin solution for use in therapeutic compositions (see Group VI) is prepared by dissolving pectin in pyrogen-free water, diluting with dilute sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate solution, buffering to a pH between 4,5 and 9 and making up to the required volume with dilute sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate solution. The viscosity of the pectin solution is at least 5 and preferably between 5,5 and 12 centipoises at 15 DEG C.ALSO:A drug such as penicillin, dihydrostreptomycin, oxytetracycline, quinine disulphate, or epinephrine hydrochloride is incorporated in an aqueous injectable solution of pectin having a viscosity of at least 5 and preferably from 5.5 to 12 centipoises at 15 DEG C. and a pH between 4.6 and 9. The resultant composition possesses prolonged activity. The pectin solution may be prepared by dissolving pectin in pyrogen-free water, diluting with dilute sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate, buffering to the required pH and making up to the required volume with dilute sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate solution.
