Abstract

Solutions of penicillin for injection are prepared by dissolving penicillin and polyvinyl pyrrolidone in water, the latter in sufficient quantity to give a concentrated solution. Preferably, the solution contains 10-20 per cent of polyvinyl pyrrolidone of molecular weight 30,000 to 40,000.ALSO:The therapeutic value of solutions of penicillin for injection is improved by utilizing the penicillin in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The polyvinyl pyrrolidone solution is, for example, a 10-20 per cent aqueous solution of a polymer of molecular weight 30,000-40,000. If desired the solution may contain small quantities of metallic salts, e.g. sodium bicarbonate and sodium, magnesium and calcium chlorides.
