Abstract
A high potency streptomycin solution stabilized against discolouration and deterioration comprises an aqueous solution of a streptomycin salt, especially the sulphate, having a pH of 5.0 to 6.5 and containing as stabilizing components in the amount of 0.1 to 1.0 per cent, at least one substance selected from the group consisting of monothioglycerol, monothiosorbitol and monothioglucose, and in the amount of 0.1 to 2.5 per cent at least one substance selected from the group consisting of salts of sulphurous and hydrosulphurous acids and aldehyde-addition products thereof. Total stabilizer is 0.5 to 1.5 per cent. A mixture of monothioglycerol and sodium bisulphite in proportions of 0.2 to 0.7 and preferably 0.5 per cent of the former and 0.25 to 0.75, and preferably 0.25 per cent of the latter is employed. Other specified stabilizers of the salt of sulphurous acid type are sodium hydrosulphite, potassium bisulphite, potassium metabisulphite and sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The pH of the solution is adjusted to the desired pH by means of a buffer such as sodium citrate. A preservative such as phenol may also be present: optional additions are (a) dihydrostreptomycin or other therapeutically active substances, especially penicillin salts; and (b) flavouring substances, in the case of oral preparations. Potency is 400 to 600 mg. streptomycin base per ml. of solution. Specification 684,459 is referred to.ALSO:A high potency streptomycin solution stabilized against discolouration and deterioration comprises an aqueous solution of a streptomycin salt especially the sulphate, having a pH of 5.0 to 6.5 and containing as stabilizing components in the amount of 0.1 to 1.0 per cent, at least one substance selected from the group consisting of monothioglycerol, monothiosorbitol and monothioglucose, and in the amount of 0.1 to 2.5 per cent at least one substance selected from the group consisting of salts of sulphurous and hydrosulphurous acids and aldehyde-addition products thereof.
