A yarn guide drum P, L of the kind having a helicoidal slot R, R<SP>1</SP> therein lying in a plane passing through the periphery of the drum at an angle to the axis for traversing yarn on to the conical end D of a cop or bobbin, is characterized in that compensating means are provided for adjusting the tension of the yarn F during the conical wind, such compensation means comprising a member Z arranged axially within the drum and having a conical surface leading to a cylindrical surface on which the yarn bears and along which it travels during its passage through the slot to increase the arc of contact with the said conical portion as the yarn travels from the base U towards the point of the conical end D, and vice versa. A cut-away portion N may be arranged in the drum for facilitating the removal of the yarn.
