Abstract

[Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] A device for maintaining the tension constant in yarns, threads, or the like being delivered from one point to another, e.g. in winding thread A from a cable B to a cone H comprises a frictional surface D between two fixed guides C, F, which lead the thread through substantially fixed positions and a movable guide E attached to a carrier which can move freely about an axle and move the guide over a path inclined to the direct path between the frictional surface and one of the fixed guides; the axis about which the carrier can oscillate is in a horizontal plane between that passing through the centre of the frictional surface and that through the fixed guide F, between which and the surface D the guide E moves, and the carrier has an adjustable weight M and is provided with a stabilising device other than a weight loosely inserted in a hollow disc or with no stabilising device. As shown the carrier K is an unweighted hollow disc pivoted at L but in a modification the disc is replaced by a pivoted bar. Specifications 523,580 and 551,828 are referred to and as described in those specifications electrical contacts may be fitted to close a circuit when the adjustable weight reaches a certain position and ring a bell or operate a knock-off device to stop the machine when the thread breaks or undue variations in tension occur.
