Abstract

A yarn balloon controlling device 4 for use in the unwinding of thread or yarn F from a cop comprises two plates disposed substantially at right angles, the length and disposition of the plates being such that a multiple balloon is maintained throughout the unwinding process, in spite of changes is the withdrawal length of the yarn. The plates are situated close to the location of a thread guide member 3, meet along a line of intersection situated along the axis of the cop, and are preferably provided with corrugated inner surfaces to intensify the disturbance effect on the ballooning yarn. The device may be incorporated in an automatic winding machine and a pivotally mounted yarn feeler member is operable through transverse slots in the plates of the yarn balloon controlling device to detect the presence of yarn. Actuation of the yarn feeler member is caused by a mechanism, which detects the absence or breakage of the yarn at a subsequent point in the machine. If the yarn is not present at the yarn balloon controlling device, e.g. due to completion of the unwinding of the cap rotary movement of the yarn feeler member continues to a point at which a switch is operated and automatic cop changing mechanism brought into operation thereby.
