Process for protecting non-textile materials against termite damage Termites are the most important and versatile animal material pests in tropical and subtropical countries. You can destroy not only the construction wood of the houses, but also all utensils and technical goods made of wood, paper, plastics, paint, rubber, leather, etc. It is therefore necessary to use suitable methods to protect such materials from being caused by termites. In more densely populated and economically significant areas z. B. the protection of houses, furniture, cables, electrical appliances, car and radio components, upholstery, documents and book covers are an important problem.
So far, termite repellants have been used in practice almost exclusively for construction timber and building boards. The cheap but skin irritation generating pentachlorophenol is often used for wood.
In many cases, the protection of materials other than wood has so far attracted little interest. Whole houses and their contents can be protected from the intrusion of termites by a very expensive soil treatment. So far mainly products such as 1,2,3,4,10,10 - hexachlor -1,4,4a, 5,8,8a - hexahydro- 1: 4.5:
8-dimethano-naphthalene, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,8-octachlor-3a, 4,7,7a-tetra'hydro-4 @: 7-methano-indane, 1: 1: 1 -Trichlor-2: 2-di- (p-chlorophenyl) -ethane, 1,2,3, 4,10,10-hexachloro-6,7-epoxy-1,4,4a, 5,6,7,8 , 8a-octa-hydro-1,4,5,8-dimethano-naphthalene and 1,4,5,6,7,8, 8-heptachlor-3a, 4,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,7-endomethylene - indan, which are known as insecticides under various trade names.
1: 1: 1 trichloro 2: 2 di (p-chlorophenyl) ethane or e gammexan (commercial product) are occasionally used as a protective agent for other non-textile materials such as paper.
In the search for particularly effective products, it has now been shown that haloalkylsulfonic acid arylamides, especially those which are substituted in the aryl radical by trifluoromethyl groups or by halogens, have an excellent termite protection effect for non-textile materials. The effectiveness could be confirmed both in laboratory tests and after familiarization with technical materials.
The compounds protect non-textile materials such as wood, building boards, paper, plastics, rubber, leather, even when using 1 to 2 "/ o, sometimes even in significantly lower concentrations, against termite damage. Example 1 </ I> A 0.5 mm thick paper filter disk with a diameter of 9 cm is treated with 2 cms of a 0.05% acetone solution of N-chloromethylsulfonyl-2-chloro-5-trifluoromethyl-aniline so that the paper is the same is moderately soaked.
After four days of evaporation, 20 termite workers are placed in a metal ring on the treated paper surface. All test animals are dead after 24 hours of contact; the filter disc remains undamaged. The experiment with a 0.005 ohigen solution shows an equally good effect.
If the concentration is reduced to 0.0005%, the killing effect is only 70% without damaging the material.
After storage in a tropical climate, the filter disc treated with 0.05% solution still has the same effect after weeks.
Example 2 1 part by weight of the compound N-chloromethylsulfonyl-2-chloro-5-trifluoromethyl-aniline is rolled into 100 parts by weight of polyethylene for 130 6-8 minutes, so that the active ingredient is homogeneously dissolved in the polyethylene is. Polyethylene foils equipped in this way still have a 100% toxic effect and complete resistance to termites after a one-year test, both in the compulsory feeding test and in the selective feeding test.
Example 3 A 0.5 mm thick filter disk of 9 cm diameter is treated with 2 em3 of a 0.05% acetone solution of N-chloromethylsulfonyl-2,4-dichloro-aniline so that the paper is soaked evenly. After four days of evaporation, 20 termite workers are placed in a metal ring on the treated paper surface. All test animals are dead after 24 hours of contact; the filter disc remains undamaged. The experiment with a 0.005% solution shows an almost equally good effect.
After storage in a tropical climate, the filter disc treated with 0.05% solution still has the same effect after months.
Example 4 1 part by weight of the compound N-chloromethylsulfonyl-2,4,5-trichloro-aniline is rolled into 100 parts by weight of polyethylene at 130 for 6-8 minutes, so that the active ingredient in the polyethylene is homogeneous is resolved. Polyethylene foils equipped in this way still have a 100% toxic effect and complete resistance to termites after a two-year test, both in the compulsory feeding test and in the feeding selective test.
Example 5 200 parts by weight of finely shredded spruce wood are feasted with 5000 parts by weight of water (50 ° C.). Then 6 parts by weight of an impregnating agent (alkaline phenol formaldehyde resin) and 4 parts by weight of paraffin, dispersed with a commercially available nonionic emulsifier, are added. Now 5 parts by weight of N-chloromethylsulfonyl-1,3,5-trichloro-aniline dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution are added. After an action time of about 20 minutes, aluminum sulfate is precipitated to pH 4.
After a further 10 minutes, the wood pulp is added to the plate former. The water runs off and the cake made of wood fiber pulp is further dewatered under the press and then dried. Example 6 30 parts by weight of dioctyl phthalate containing 4 parts by weight of N-chloromethylsulfonyl-2,4-dichloro-anilide are stirred into 70 parts by weight of polyvinyl chloride. Then 1 part by weight of diphenylthiourea is added as a stabilizer.
Mix well (175 C) on the mixing mill, gel within 5 minutes and then press the plates in the usual way.
