Abstract
<PICT:0643516/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0643516/IV (a)/2> Filamentary material, such as yarns or filaments, to be forwarded by frictional contact with a driving roll, is passed round an idler roll and one or more additional supports, so that it makes at least one complete circuit round them, in such a manner that the idler roll and supports are encircled, but the driving roll is not. The additional supports are, preferably, idler rolls also, with their axes substantially parallel to that of the driving roll. If desired, the driving roll may be movable away from the idler rolls, but it is preferred to mount the idler rolls movably. In one modification, three idler rolls 6, 7, 8 are mounted on stub shafts on a frame 10, which can swivel about an axle 11 and is held in position by a spring 12. When the bracket is in the position shown in Fig. 4, the idler rolls may be threaded up by winding a yarn 5 in several loops round them. The loops may be kept separate by aligning one roll out of parallel, e.g. by 4 degrees, with the driving roll 9, or, alternatively, grooved idler rolls, stationary supports, combs, or similar guides may be used. After threading, the frame 10 is placed in operative position, Fig. 3, to obtain a good frictional contact of the yarn 5 with the driving roll 9. Instead of being pivoted, the frame 10 may be slidably mounted, or two idler rolls may be mounted on arms having a scissors action. In one example, a polyethylene terephthalate yarn is stretched between a feed roll and an arrangement of rolls according to the invention, wherein the yarn takes six turns round three idler rolls and is pressed against a driving roll rotating five times faster than the feed roll. In another example, viscose yarn is wound three times round two idler rolls and is fed by the driving roll to a twisting head.
