Abstract

Polymers containing in the polymer molecule at least 80 per cent of acrylonitrile are dissolved in a solution of zinc chloride and calcium chloride in a mixture of water and at least one water-miscible aliphatic liquid containing one alcoholic hydroxyl group and not more than 6 carbon atoms in the molecule, e.g. methyl and ethyl alcohols, ethylene glycol monomethyl and monoethyl ethers, diacetone alcohol and ethyl lactate, the total weight of combined salts being at least 35 per cent of the solvent mixture. A copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate is specified. Fibres are formed from the solutions by wet-spinning.
