Abstract

Polymers containing at least 80 per cent. of acrylonitrile in the molecule, such as polyacrylonitrile and copolymers with styrene, methyl acrylate, and vinyl acetate, are dissolved in a solution of lithium bromide, lithium iodide, sodium iodide, or zinc chloride in a mixture of acetone or acetonitrile, or both, and at least one compound chosen from water, ethyl lactate, and water-miscible aliphatic monohydric alcohols containing not more than 6 carbon atoms in the molecule. Fibres may be spun from the solutions by extrusion into water. Specifications 672,775 and 714,530 are referred to.
