Abstract
Polymers containing at least 60 per cent of acrylonitrile are stabilized by the addition of 1 to 20 per cent of a compound having the general formula <FORM:0774768/IV(a)/1> wherein one R is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the other R is selected from the group consisting of the same alkyl group and hydrogen, for example, betadimethylaminopropionitrile, beta-ethylaminopropionitrile, beta - diethylaminopropionitrile, beta-isopropylaminopropionitrile and beta-n-butylaminopropionitrile. Polymers specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers with isobutylene, methyl acrylate, 2-vinyl pyridine and vinyl acetate and a terpolymer with isobutylene and allyl alcohol. In an example the stabilizer is incorporated in an acetone solution of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and isobutylene, which is then cast into films.
