Abstract
Polymers containing at least 60 per cent of acrylonitrile are stabilized by the addition thereto of from 2 to 20 per cent of a compound having the general formula <FORM:0774769/IV(a)/1> wherein each X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, propyl and isopropyl, the number of carbon atoms in the X substituents being at least one and not more than 4; one Y is sulphur and the other Y is either oxygen or sulphur; and Z is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the total number of carbon atoms in the compound not exceeding 7, for example, methyl N-isopropyl dithiocarbamate, methyl N-ethyl and isopropyl N-ethyl thiolcarbamates, and methyl-N-methyl, methyl N-propyl, ethyl N-methyl, ethyl N,N-dimethyl, ethyl N-ethyl, ethyl N-isopropyl, isopropyl N-methyl, isopropyl N-ethyl and isopropyl N - (2 - hydroxyethyl) thionocarbamates. Polymers specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers with isobutylene, methyl acrylate and methacrylate, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, allyl alcohol and vinyl pyridines. In an example the stabilizer is incorporated in an acetone solution of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and isobutylene, which is then cast into films.
