Abstract

Polymers containing at least 60 per cent of acrylonitrile are stabilized by adding thereto from 2 to 20 per cent of a compound having the general formula <FORM:0739646/IV (a)/1> wherein X is methyl, ethyl, or 2-hydroxyethyl, and Y is hydrogen or methyl, compounds specified being N-(2-hydroxyethyl) N-methyl formamide, N-(2-hydroxyethyl) N-ethyl formamide, N,N-di-(2-hydroxyethyl) formamide, and the corresponding acetamides. Polymers of acrylonitrile specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers with methyl acrylate and isobutylene. In an example the stabilizer is incorporated in an acetone solution of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and isobutylene. Fibres, films, and mouldings may be prepared from the stabilized polymers.
