Abstract
Polyacrylonitrile or copolymers of acrylonitrile with other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and containing at least 60 per cent of combined acrylonitrile are stabilized by the addition thereto of 1 to 20 per cent of a hydrocarbonoxypropionitrile having the general formula R-(O-CH2CH2CN)n wherein R is an alkyl or alkylene radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and n is 1 when R is alkyl and 2 when R is alkylene, for example beta - methoxy - beta - ethoxy-, beta - n - propoxy - and beta - isopropoxy - propionitrile, beta, beta1 - methylene-, beta, beta1 - ethylene- and beta, beta1 - 1,2 - propene - di(oxypropionitrile). Copolymers specified are those of acrylonitrile with isobutylene, methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, 2-vinyl pyridine and a terpolymer with isobutylene and allyl alcohol. In an example the stabilizer is added to an acetone solution of an acrylonitrile/isobutylene copolymer.
