Abstract

Polymers containing in the polymer molecule not less than 80 per cent of acrylonitrile are dissolved in a solvent mixture consisting of water, methyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol or both, and at least one highly water-soluble salt selected from alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium and guanidine thiocyanates, lithium bromide and iodide, sodium iodide and zinc chloride, the salt constituting at least 35 per cent of the solvent mixture and the alcohol or mixture of alcohols constituting from 4 to 10 per cent of the solvent mixture. Polymers specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and styrene. Fibres may be spun from the solutions by extrusion into water.
