Abstract
Polymers containing in the polymer molecule not less than 80 per cent. of acrylonitrile are dissolved in a solvent mixture consisting of water, one or more water-miscible aliphatic liquids containing one alcoholic hydroxyl group and not more than 6 carbon atoms in the molecule, and at least one highly water soluble salt selected from alkali metal thiocyanates, alkaline earth metal thiocyanates, ammonium thiocyanate, guanidine thiocyanate, lithium bromide, lithium iodide, sodium iodide, and zinc iodide, the salt or salts constituting at least 35 per cent. of the solvent mixture. Polymers specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with methyl acrylate. Aliphatic liquids specified are methyl and ethyl alcohols, the monomethyl and monoethyl ethers of ethylene glycol, diacetone alcohol, and ethyl lactate. The solutions may be formed into threads by extrusion into water which is preferably cooled to a temperature not exceeding 10 DEG C., the resultant threads then being washed, hot-stretched, and dyed.
