Abstract
Acrylonitrile or a mixture of comonomers containing at least 85% of acrylonitrile and up to 15% of another monoethylenically unsaturated compound is photopolymerized in an aqueous solution containing at least 55% of zinc chloride, based on the weight of salt and water, at a temperature below 40 DEG C. under radiation with near-ultra violet rays of wave length 3500 to 3700<\>rA and sensitised with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and an acid or acids. Specified acids are hydrochloric, phosphoric, acetic and formic acids. An example describes the copolymerization of acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and sodium allyl sulphonate in aqueous zinc chloride solution in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and hydrochloric acid. The polymer solutions obtained may be spun directly into fibres.
