Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a crosslinked polymer having excellent swellability with water, in one process even at a low concentration of alkali solution, by contacting an acrylonitrile polymer with the aqueous alkali solution containing a specific amount of an electrolytic salt.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylonitrile (AN) polymer is contacted with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide (pref. 0.25W6 mol/1,000g solution) containing an electrolytic salt (e.g. sodium nitrate, etc.) (≥0.5 mol/1,000g solution) in the heterogeneous system. The AN polymer is hydrolyzed to the desired hydrosol by the treatment.
EFFECT: Since the alkali concentration is low, there is little harm and danger in the process. An industrial waste, e.g. fibrous waste, polymer waste, etc., can be used as the AN polymer.
USE: Soft contact lenses, sanitary materials, etc..
