Abstract

PURPOSE: A water-containing gel, useful as a low-temperature insulation, having stable shape retention at normal temperature and so flexible as to fit curved human body even at -30°C, which is prepared by the addition of an alcohol and boric acid (sodium borate) to an aqueous solution of a PVA.
CONSTITUTION: (A) An aqueous solution of a PVA, of polymerization degree 500W2,500 and of saponification degree 70W100%, is mixed with (B) an alcohol (e.g., ethyl alcohol) and (C) boric acid (sodium borate), to obtain a water-containing gel. It is preferable to mix 2% or more of PVA, 3W40% of (B) component and 0.1W5% of (C) component. The obtained gel provides the most convenient low- temperature insulation when used after it is allowed to stand in a cooling chamber at 0W30°C for about 1W12hr and water becomes semicrystalline.
