Abstract

PURPOSE: To suppress the aging phenomenon of starch sizing liquid caused by the lapse of time, by adding a nonionic acrylamide polymer and an alkaline aqueous solution of a styrene polymer to a thermochemically denaturated starch sizing liquid.
CONSTITUTION: A starch sizing liquid is produced by adding an oxidizing agent and a solution of sodium hydroxide to starch such as corn starch, heating the mixture to effect thermochemical denaturation of the starch and adding warm water to the product. The aging of the starch sizing liquid caused by the lapse of time can be extremely effectively suppressed by adding (A) a nonionic acrylamide polymer such as polymethacrylamide and (B) an alkaline aqueous solution of a styrene polymer (e.g. styrene-methacrylic acid copolymer) and e.g. sodium hydroxide to the starch sizing liquid. The amount of the component A is preferably 1.6W35.0wt.% based on the starch in the starch sizing liquid.
