Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance, having a very high water absorption of a fluid, e.g. blood or urine containing an electrolyte, and useful for a sanitary article and a diaper for absorbing urine, by saponifying a starch graft copolymer of polyacrylonitrile, and laminting the saponified copolymer on fibers, etc.
CONSTITUTION: (B) Acrylonitrile in an amount of 300W600pts. wt. based on 100pts.wt. starch is grafted onto (A) 100pts.wt. starch, e.g. corn starch, dispersed in 100W1,000pts.wt. aqueous solution containing 0.1W10wt% alkali in the presence of an initiator, e.g. ammonium ceric nitrate. Sodium hydroxide is then added to the resultant dispersion of the starch graft copolymer of polyacrylonitrile to saponify the graft copolymer at about 90°C. The saponified copolymer is neutralized with dilute sulfuric acid, etc. to separate the polymer and afford the aimed powder.
