Abstract
Artificial threads, fibres, filaments and the like of a polyacrylonitrile are obtained by extruding a solution of the polymer in a concentrated aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt, which yields highly hydrated ions in aqueous solution, into an aqueous coagulating bath in which at least 5 per cent by weight of the water-soluble salt is dissolved, and which also contains a water-miscible alcohol such as methanol or ethanol, preferably in a proportion of at least 5 per cent by weight of the coagulating bath. The coagulating bath may be used at a temperature of 10 DEG C. or lower, or at a higher temperature, e.g. 15-25 DEG C. or up to 40 DEG C. The water-soluble salt employed in the spinning solution and in the coagulating bath may be zinc chloride, calcium chloride, lithium bromide, calcium bromide, calcium iodide, zinc nitrate, calcium nitrate, aluminium perchlorate or a thiocyanate of sodium, calcium or zinc. An organic salt such as guanidine thiocyanate may be used. To avoid undesired increase in the concentration of the salt in the coagulation bath, aqueous alcohol may be added to the bath during the course of a continuous spinning operation. In an example, a copolymer of acrylonitrile (90 per cent) and methyl acrylate (10 per cent), having a molecular weight of about 100,000, is dissolved in a 50 per cent aqueous solution of calcium thiocyanate to form a 7 per cent solution of the polymer. The solution is extruded into an aqueous solution containing 10 per cent of calcium thiocyanate and 10 per cent of methanol. The threads obtained are washed with water stretched in steam, and allowed to relax while heated. Part of the wash water is added to the coagulating bath and methanol is pumped in to maintain the bath composition substantially constant. Calcium thiocyanate is recovered as a solution from the used coagulating liquid by distillation to remove firstly the methanol and then sufficient water to give an aqueous solution for use in dissolving fresh polymer. Specifications 459,596, 672,775 and 715,915 are referred to.
